I don’t care which topping you choose, it this French toast recipe is amazing!

My friends i make this French toast every week! Everyone loves eating my Incredible brioche French Toast, especially the crisp exterior with pillowy soft interior.

I have made French Toast for 4 decades with every bread imaginable, and the clear winner for me is using thick slices of Brioche bread. The rich, buttery flavor and airy texture of Brioche elevate the dish to a whole new level, creating a delightful contrast with the sweet maple syrup drizzled on top. Let me tell you something: you really can use any bread with this custard soak recipe, as long as you toast the bread. However, it’s essential to consider the characteristics of the bread you choose, as each type will impart its unique flavor and texture to the final result. Just know that with fresher or softer sliced bread, you will not achieve the crisp, firm pieces that make each bite so satisfying and enjoyable. That crispy exterior combined with a soft, custardy interior is what truly makes French Toast an indulgent breakfast treat worth savoring.

French toast is day old bread soaked in custard and baked. You can get really creative with your bread or shapes. When my kids were little, I used to make French toast sticks. This was the only way I could get my son to eat eggs 😉 If you do decide to try French toast sticks Remember to slice (thick) bread pieces about 3-4 inches long and toast each side/ you want all 4 surfaces to brown so it doesn’t get mushy.

Incredible French Toast

Drizzle warm maple syrup over this Brioche French Toast and your taste buds will surely go nuts!
Servings: 4 servings
Course: Breakfast, brunch
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 Challah Bread 16 oz loaf
  • 5 eggs large
  • 1 1/2 cups of half and half or milk
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp Unsalted butter 3-4

Equipment

  • 1 large tabletop griddle/ flat top cooking surface optional

Method

  1. Prepare the pan you will be using. large frying pan or tabletop griddle cooktop to make all at once.
  2. In a large bowl mix Eggs, Milk/cream and vanilla together. Set aside.
  3. Slice bread that you are using. My favorite for French toast is Challah bread because it stays firm and absorbs the custard really well without falling apart like the brioche. (although if I only have brioche, I just toast it up in a 250-degree oven for about 20 minutes to dry it out)
  4. In a large Pyrex I pour the custard and soak the bread slices for about 5 minutes each side.
  5. Heat up the cooktop or frying pan to medium high heat.
  6. Add a tablespoon to two (depending on the size of pan) and spread melted butter around. Reduce heat if it’s sizzling too much, I don’t want to burn the butter.
  7. Place each slice of soaked bread on frying pan.
  8. Allow to sit there for about 3-4 minutes then flip.
  9. NOW! Reduce the heat to medium low or 300 degrees. This way the inside cooks thoroughly. We are looking for toasted outside and at the same time Soft pillowy (and cooked!) inside.
  10. Top this with powdered sugar/ cinnamon.
  11. Whatever your heart desires.
  12. I’ve been making this Caramel Apple Bourbon sauce that my family loves. It’s not too difficult and tastes amazing! (You can top ice cream with it too! 😊
